Hi me and my two girlfriends are going to New York and we are staying at Midtown.Is Midtown a safe area in NY?

We have never been to U.S so all of us been female we are a little worried.Where are the safe and unsafe areas? and what is the difference between midtown east or west? (is any better than the other).Thank you very much.
